ABOUT OLGA LOWENSTEIN

A London-based artist, costume and fashion designer.

For 25 years I ran my own studio in London — making bespoke clothes for private clients and selling through small boutiques. Before that, I sketched costumes for the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, where I learned something that still shapes how I draw today: the sketches for the main characters always began with the face, and moved outward to the garments. It seems their personalities guided me in the right direction.

I began painting and playing with colour at a very young age. It has always been my source of comfort, tranquillity, and delight. As a teenager, I started making the outfits I couldn't find in shops — and I was thrilled. That was the beginning: first a designer for myself, then for others.

I've always believed one form of art helps me grasp what to do in another. Costume, colour, and line have never been separate things to me; they feed one another.

Now I would like to share those feelings of joy and tranquillity with you, through my drawings and paintings. I draw best while listening to radio shows where people from all sorts of interesting backgrounds are invited to speak — their stories find their way into the work.
